Healthy coral skeletons and lush calcareous algae need more than just calcium. They also rely on carbonate and bicarbonate, which help form strong structures and keep pH levels stable between 8.1 and 8.4. When these levels swing too much, the whole system feels the strain. That’s where the Salifert Carbonate Hardness & Alkalinity (KH/Alk) Profi-Test Kit comes in.
This salifert test kit is sensitive enough to pick up even the smallest changes in alkalinity, giving results in sharp, clear steps of 0.1 meq/L. That kind of accuracy helps prevent fluctuations and keeps your reef steady at the sweet spot of around 2.8 meq/L. With reliable readings, you can spot imbalances early and take action on giving an aquarium water test kit before corals or algae feel the effects.
The kit also pairs perfectly with Salifert’s KH pH buffer additive, making it easy to correct alkalinity without upsetting your system’s pH. Each box is good for up to 200 tests, giving you plenty of checks to keep your aquarium thriving.
Key Benefits
Measures carbonate and bicarbonate levels to support coral growth and healthy pH.
Detects small shifts in alkalinity with clear, sharp color changes.
Helps stabilize pH balance so your aquarium stays in a safe range.
Provides accurate readings to maintain a thriving aquatic environment.
Long-lasting kit designed for many reliable tests.
Reagent KH contains calcium hydroxide, which may irritate skin and eyes.
Avoid contact with eyes and skin; rinse thoroughly if contact occurs.
Keep out of reach of children.
Use gloves and eye protection recommended.
Store reagents in a cool, dry, shaded place.
Follow instructions carefully for accurate readings.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Use the syringe to add 4 mL of tank water to the vial.
Add 4 drops of KH indicator and swirl for 5 seconds.
With the 1 mL syringe, add the KH reagent drop by drop, swirling each time.
Stop when the color shifts from blue-green to pink.
Check how much reagent was used and compare it to the chart for your dKH reading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does alkalinity even matter in my tank?
+
It’s basically the backbone of a reef tank. Without steady alkalinity, pH bounces around and corals don’t grow the way they should. Think of it as the “support beams” holding everything up.
Is this salifert test kit really that accurate?
+
Yep, it’s super sharp. It can spot teeny changes, like 0.1 meq/L. That’s enough to warn you before corals start sulking.
How long will one Salifert Carbonate Hardness & Alkalinity (KH/Alk) Profi-Test Kit last me?
+
Longer than you think. If you’re testing weekly, it’ll stretch for months. Heavy testers can still get 100+ runs from a single box.
Do I have to wait forever for results?
+
Nope. Add a few drops, swirl it, watch the color shift.
How often should I check alkalinity levels?
+
Once or twice a week works for most tanks. Got a coral-heavy reef? Then testing a little more often keeps things safer.
